Fourth Sunday in Lent

Opening Hymn:

Verse 1:

When I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of Glory died

My richest gain I count but loss

And pour contempt on all my pride

When I survey, when I survey the wondrous cross

Verse 2:

Forbid it Lord that I should boast

Save in the death of Christ my God

All the vain things that charm me most

I sacrifice them to His blood

When I survey, when I survey the wondrous cross

Verse 3:

See from His head His Hands His Feet

Sorrow and love flow mingled down

Did ever such love and sorrow meet

Or thorns compose so rich a crown

When I survey, When I survey the wondrous cross

Verse 4:

Were the whole realm of nature mine

That were a present far too small

Love so amazing so divine

Demands my soul my life my all

When I survey, When I survey the Wondrous Cross

Psalm 51 - Responsive Reading

(To be Led by the Head of the Household)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

Save me from bloodguilt, o God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, o God, you will not despise.

1 Samuel 16:1-13 David Anointed King

The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.”

Samuel did what the LORD commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Then Jessue called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” Then Samuel said to JEssue, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.”

And Samuel said to JEsse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

Ephesians 5:8-14 Walk as Children of Light

“…for at one time you were in darkness, but now you are light in the lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed to the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

John 9: 1-7, 13-17 & 34-39 Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. AS long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing…

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”…

They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and you would teach us?” And they cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in Him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Jesus said, “For judgement I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”

Children’s Sermon:

Sermon Hymn:

Verse 1:

When trials come no longer fear

For in the pain our God draws near,

To fire a faith worth more than gold

And there His faithfulness is told,

And there His faithfulness is told.

Verse 2:

Within the Night I know Your Peace

The breath of God brings strength to me,

And new each morning mercy flows

AS treasures of the darkness grow,

As treasures of the darkness grow.

Verse 3:

I turn to wisdom not my own

For every battle You have known,

My confidence will rest in you

Your love endures Your ways are good,

Your love endures your ways are good.

Verse 4:

When I am weary with the cost

I see the triumph of the cross,

So in its shadow I shall run

‘Till He completes the work begun,

‘Till He completes the work begun.

Verse 5:

One day all things will be made new

I’ll see the hope You called me to,

And in your kingdom paved with gold

I’ll praise your faithfulness of old,

I’ll praise your faithfulness of old.

Sermon: Profiles in Courage - 1 Samuel 16

Verse 1:

What grace is mine,

That He who dwells in endless light

Called through the night to find my distant soul,

And from his scars poured mercy

that would plead for me,

That I might live and in His name be known

Chorus:

So I will go wherever He is calling me

I lose my life to find my life in Him

I give my all to gain the hope that never dies

I bow my heart, take up my cross and follow him

Verse 2:

What grace is mine to know, his breath alive in me

Beneath His wings my weary soul may soar,

All fear can flee for death’s dark night is overcome

My savior lives and reigns forevermore

Chorus:

So I will go wherever he is calling me,

I lose my life to find my life in him

I give my all to gain the hope that never dies,

I bow my heart take up my cross and follow Him
