Fifth Sunday in Lent

Opening Hymn:

Verse 1:

He became sin, who knew no sin,

That we might become His righteousness;

He humbled himself, and carried the cross.

Love so amazing, Love so amazing.

CHORUS:

Jesus Messiah; Name above all names;

Blessed Redeemer; Emmanuel.

The rescue for sinners,

The ransom from heaven;

Jesus Messiah, Lord of all.

Verse 2:

His body the bread, His blood the wine

Broken and poured out, all for love.

The whole earth trembled, And the veil was torn.

Love so amazing, love so amazing.

CHORUS:

Jesus Messiah; Name above all names;

Blessed Redeemer; Emmanuel.

The rescue for sinners,

The ransom from heaven;

Jesus Messiah, Lord of all.

Bridge:

All our hope is in You, All our hope is in You;

All the glory to You, God, the Light of the World

CHORUS:

Jesus Messiah; Name above all names;

Blessed Redeemer; Emmanuel.

The rescue for sinners,

The ransom from heaven;

Jesus Messiah, Lord of all.

Confession - Psalm 23

(To be Led by the Head of the Household)

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

O Lord, you are my constant companion. There is no need that you cannot fulfill.

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Whether your course for me takes me to the mountain tops of glorious ecstasy or to the valleys of human suffering, you are by my side, you are ever present with me.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You are close beside me when I tread the dark streets of danger, and even when I flirt with death itself, you will not leave me. When the pain is severe, you are near to comfort.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

When the burden is heavy, you are there to lean upon.

When depression darkens my soul, you touch me with eternal joy.

When I feel empty and alone, you fill the aching vacuum with your power.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

My security is in your promise to be near to me always, and in the knowledge that you will never let me go.

Forgive us, O Lord, when we seek fulfillment outside of your will.

Forgive us for when we walk in the paths of unrighteousness.

Forgive us for the times we are fearful instead of trusting.

Forgive us when we fail to lean upon you.

Forgive us for when we fail to realize how abundantly you have blessed us.

Forgive us for when we seek security other than in your goodness and mercy. For all these and all of our sins, forgive us for Jesus’ sake.

Philippians 2: 1-11 Name Above All Names

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Matthew 26: 14-46 Judas to Betray Jesus

Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he reclined at the table with the twelve. And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “IS it I, Lord?” He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. The Son of MAn goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”

Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same. Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”

And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of MAn is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Sermon Hymn:

VERSE 1:

Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free

Rolling as a mighty ocean In its fullness over me

Underneath me, all around me Is the current of Thy love.

Leading onward, leading homeward To Thy glorious rest above

Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus

Spread his praise from shore to shore

How he loveth, ever loveth

Changeth never, nevermore

Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus

‘Tis heaven of heavens to me

And it lifts me up to glory

For it lifts me up to thee!

Closing Hymn:

Verse 1:

When I lose my way and I forget my name,

Remind me who I am.

In the mirror all I see is who I don’t want to be,

Remind me who I am.

In the loneliest places, when I can’t remember what grace is.

CHORUS:

Tell me once again

Who I am to you,

Who I am to you.

Tell me lest I forget

who I am to you

That I belong to you.

Verse 2:

When my heart is like a stone and I forget my Name,

Remind me who I am.

When I can’t receive your love, afraid I’ll never be enough,

Remind me who I am.

If I’m your beloved can you help me believe it?

CHORUS:

Tell me once again

Who I am to you,

Who I am to you.

Tell me lest I forget

who I am to you

That I belong to you.

BRIDGE:

I’n the one you love, I’m the one you love.

That will be enough, I’m the one you love.

CHORUS:

Tell me once again

Who I am to you,

Who I am to you.

Tell me lest I forget

who I am to you

That I belong to you.
